With major releases approaching, players had plenty of reasons to tune in and discover what the developers have been preparing for Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2.
The excitement surrounding the event was reflected in its impressive audience. At one point during the presentation, the official Twitch broadcast attracted more than 230,000 concurrent viewers, highlighting the considerable interest in the announcements. The event drew attention from players eager to discover what lies ahead for both Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2.

The timing made this year's ExileCon particularly significant. Path of Exile 1 is preparing to welcome its new expansion, Covens of Umbra, on November 13, while Path of Exile 2 is approaching another major milestone with its highly anticipated 1.0 release scheduled for December 11. With both games entering important stages of development, the presentation provided an opportunity to explore the direction Grinding Gear Games is taking with each title.
Path of Exile 1: Covens of Umbra Brings Major Changes to the Endgame
Path of Exile 1 had plenty of news to share during ExileCon 2026. Grinding Gear Games revealed more about its upcoming 3.30 expansion, Covens of Umbra, arriving on November 13 with a new Challenge League and a major overhaul of several endgame systems.
Beyond the league itself, some of the biggest announcements included the replacement of Scarabs, a redesigned Atlas Passive Tree, changes to familiar league mechanics, and a substantial rework of item drops.
Covens of Umbra: New Challenges, Fates, and the Wickerman
The new league introduces the Coven Queen, whose followers are performing dark rituals across Wraeclast in an attempt to summon her. Players will encounter these Covenites throughout their journey and have the opportunity to disrupt their rituals, unlocking a new mechanic called Fates.
After defeating the Covenites, players can choose a Fate that modifies the boss encounter in their current area. Each Fate introduces additional effects, increasing the difficulty of the fight while offering greater rewards.
Another important addition is the Wickerman, which allows players to harness powers from defeated bosses. By collecting Viscera from bosses empowered by Fates, players can place these remains on their Wickerman and claim a portion of their enemies' power. Every campaign and Atlas map boss has its own unique Viscera, offering different powers to discover.
For those seeking even greater challenges, Grim Fates extend this mechanic to some of the most difficult bosses in the Atlas, with Pinnacle Boss Viscera among the rewards.
Goodbye Scarabs: Threads of Creation and a Redesigned Atlas
One of the biggest changes announced for Path of Exile 1 is the removal of Scarabs, which will be replaced by a new system called Threads of Creation.
Threads can be used directly through the Map Device to add specific league mechanics to an area while increasing monster rarity and difficulty. Investing additional Threads also increases the chances of powerful effects appearing within the selected mechanic.
The Atlas Passive Tree is receiving a complete overhaul as well, with a redesigned layout, dozens of new passive clusters, and additional modifiers. Several effects previously tied to Scarabs will now be available directly through the Atlas, allowing players to guarantee them through their passive choices.
These changes bring a different approach to endgame customization, particularly for players who enjoy planning their mapping and farming strategies.
Familiar League Mechanics Are Changing Too
Grinding Gear Games also announced improvements and adjustments to several existing league mechanics.
One of the highlights is the return of Mirage as part of the core game. Mirages will be able to appear randomly in maps or through map modifiers, and they will now cover entire maps, effectively allowing players to run their content a second time. Saresh is also returning as a more challenging encounter.
Beyond is receiving changes too. Defeating a Beyond boss will no longer stop additional monster portals from appearing, and some bosses may open portals leading into their own realm.
Harvest will replace the usual Sacred Grove encounters in maps with tangled roots that players can modify using currency. Expedition introduces a new service from Gwennen, allowing her gambling mechanic to involve players' own items.
Incursion brings a notable change to the Temple of Atzoatl, where Atziri will replace the Vaal Omnitect and introduce further adjustments to the temple.
A Major Loot Rework and New Unique Items
Another important announcement concerns the way loot drops throughout Path of Exile.
In the endgame, unidentified Magic and Rare items will be able to drop with visible tiers that improve their properties, making it easier to recognize which items may be worth picking up and identifying.
Item rarity is also being reworked. Increased rarity on maps and monsters will now improve different types of drops, including the chances of finding more valuable currency and Unique items while running difficult content.
The expansion will also introduce new Unique items, giving players more equipment options to discover.
With Covens of Umbra arriving on November 13, Path of Exile 1 players have much more than a new league to look forward to. Between the new boss mechanics, changes to the Atlas, updates to existing league content, and the loot overhaul, the 3.30 expansion brings plenty to explore when it launches.
Path of Exile 2 1.0: Full Release Arrives December 11
ExileCon 2026 also brought some major announcements for Path of Exile 2, as Grinding Gear Games unveiled what players can expect from the highly anticipated 1.0 release, marking the end of Early Access and the game's official transition to free-to-play.
Among the highlights are the completion of the six-Act campaign, two new playable classes, a new Challenge League, and significant changes to the endgame, skills, items, and character progression.
The Complete Campaign: Acts 5 and 6 Finally Arrive
One of the biggest announcements was the completion of Path of Exile 2's campaign, with Acts 5 and 6 bringing the story to its conclusion.
Players will return to Oriath, a land devastated by countless disasters, as they confront the Twilight Order and the Beast. The two new Acts introduce 24 distinct areas to explore, ranging from ruined districts to impressive locations filled with new enemies and challenges.
The campaign expansion also brings 18 new unique bosses, each featuring its own mechanics and encounters, alongside more than 20 new Champion Rare enemies designed to offer additional challenges throughout the journey.
Two New Classes: Shadow and Duelist
The 1.0 release will also introduce two highly anticipated classes, each bringing new combat mechanics and playstyles to Path of Exile 2.
The Shadow specializes in daggers, traps, and stealth, allowing players to approach combat in a completely different way. Its new Stealth mechanic makes enemies unable to detect the character until they get close enough, while also granting additional benefits to dagger skills.
Traps introduce another layer of strategy, allowing players to prepare attacks from the shadows and trigger combinations of explosions when engaging enemies. The Shadow will arrive with two Ascendancy Classes: Assassin and Infiltrator.

Meanwhile, the Duelist focuses on sword combat, speed, and precision. Its defining feature is the new Stance system, which allows players to enhance their sword skills through Ready Stance and unlock additional combat possibilities with Sand and Blood Stances.
The Duelist will also have two Ascendancy Classes available at launch: Knight and Master-at-Arms.

Conquerors of Wraeclast: A New Challenge League
Another major highlight is Conquerors of Wraeclast, the new Challenge League arriving alongside the 1.0 release.
In this league, players will join Varek and his mercenaries, recruit warriors, and lead their own armies into battle while exploring a new storyline involving the ancient Blood Lord.
The mechanic introduces more than 70 new points of interest and over 20 missions, providing opportunities to recruit troops, discover enemy fortifications, and plan assaults against opposing forces.
As players progress, they'll also be able to establish their own stronghold in the endgame. Three different factions will be available, each featuring its own fortress style and unique troops, along with more than 20 buildings and upgrades.
Conquering enemy castles will provide valuable rewards, including a new crafting material used to reforge equipment.
The league also introduces a larger conflict between factions, with more than 100 castles available to conquer across the league. Players will be able to work alongside others in their chosen faction, competing for control of these locations and gaining advantages as their territory expands.
A New Way to Progress Through the Atlas
Conquerors of Wraeclast also brings an interesting addition to the endgame with a new real-time Atlas system.
Players will be able to recruit up to three commanders and assign them troops and Waystones, allowing their armies to complete maps and collect rewards on their behalf.
Commanders can also be assigned different objectives, including exploring the Atlas, completing Towers, and searching for specific rewards using Tablets.
It's a new approach to Atlas progression that adds another layer of strategy to the endgame, alongside traditional mapping.
New Unique Items, Skills, and Major Class Improvements
Beyond the new campaign and Challenge League, Path of Exile 2's 1.0 release will bring plenty of changes to character progression and equipment. Grinding Gear Games announced more than 40 new Unique Items and improvements to over 70 existing ones, alongside new Skill Gems and a substantial rework of Support Gems, offering players more possibilities when creating their builds.

The Passive Skill Tree is also receiving a major overhaul, with hundreds of new stats and changes to Jewel Socket placement. Jewel Sockets will now be integrated into passive clusters, introducing new considerations when planning character progression.

Several existing classes and Ascendancies are getting significant improvements as well.
The Mercenary will be able to reload ammunition in the background while using other ammo types, making it faster and easier to switch between them. Meanwhile.
the Infernalist is gaining a new demonic minion capable of casting any spell assigned to it, the ability to summon up to three Infernal Hounds, and new Covenant skills that grant benefits through deals with Demon Lords at the cost of sacrifices.
The Blood Mage is also receiving some interesting changes, including a rework of Corrupted Blood that makes affected enemies take double damage from all sources while consuming the corruption. New skills and curses will let players unleash stored blood, turn enemies into minions, and create tendrils of blood to corrupt their foes.
The Acolyte of Chayula, on the other hand, will be able to summon a companion that can use Quarterstaff skills and even sacrifice their own life to transfer their soul into a clone, causing their previous body to explode.
With the complete campaign, two new classes, Conquerors of Wraeclast, new endgame features, and extensive improvements to existing systems, the 1.0 release represents a major milestone for Path of Exile 2.
Arriving on December 11, 2026, the full version will also mark the game's transition to free-to-play, opening the doors of Wraeclast to everyone.
