The new Path of Exile 2 update, Return of the Ancients (Update 0.5), has launched with impressive numbers and has already become one of the most successful releases in the game's history.
Just a few hours after the servers went live, Path of Exile 2 surpassed 400,000 concurrent players on Steam, reaching approximately 406,000 users online at the same time. This marks the second-highest player peak ever recorded by the game, trailing only behind its original launch in December 2024.

But that wasn't the only milestone achieved by the update. During the launch of 0.5, Path of Exile 2 also reached the top of Steam's Best Sellers chart, outperforming several popular titles and highlighting the massive interest surrounding the new season.
Return of the Ancients Launches With Strong Community Engagement
Since its announcement, Update 0.5 has generated significant excitement among players.
The update introduced the Runes of Aldur league, new Ascendancies, new skill options, quality-of-life improvements, and major changes across several game systems. Combined with the anticipation built up over the past months, interest in the new season continued to grow leading up to launch.
The result was immediate. As soon as the servers opened, hundreds of thousands of players returned to explore the new content, helping Update 0.5 achieve the second-highest player peak in Path of Exile 2 history.
The Update Also Arrived With Free Access
Alongside the launch of Update 0.5, Grinding Gear Games also introduced a Free Weekend for Path of Exile 2.
During the promotional period, new players can try the game for free and experience the content introduced in Return of the Ancients. The event gives more players an opportunity to discover the game during one of its most active periods since launch.
How Did Update 0.5 Launch?
Beyond the impressive player numbers, another notable aspect of the launch was the overall stability of the first few hours.
As is common with major online game updates, some players reported specific issues on the official forums after the servers went live. Reports included isolated crashes, infinite loading screens in certain situations, interface-related bugs, and a few issues involving newly introduced skills and mechanics.
However, despite the massive number of players online simultaneously, there were no widespread reports of server outages, league rollbacks, or extended emergency maintenance during the opening hours of the update.

Considering the scale of the launch and the absence of major server-related issues, the start of the season was relatively stable.
What Do These Numbers Mean for Path of Exile 2?
Surpassing 400,000 concurrent players is an impressive achievement on its own. Combined with reaching the top of Steam's Best Sellers chart, Update 0.5 further demonstrates the strong interest the community continues to have in the future of Path of Exile 2.

The numbers recorded during the first hours show that the new season successfully brought together a massive number of players and generated one of the highest activity peaks the game has ever seen.
Conclusion:
With more than 400,000 concurrent players, the number one spot on Steam's Best Sellers chart, and a strong launch overall, Update 0.5 has already become one of the biggest moments in Path of Exile 2's history.
It is still too early to know how the meta will evolve, but the first few hours have made one thing clear: player interest is stronger than ever. With massive participation and plenty of new content to explore, Return of the Ancients is off to a very promising start.
