During the official livestream with ZiggyD, Mark and Jonathan revealed several new features coming to Path of Exile 1. While many questions were answered live, some of the most frequently asked ones were addressed later in an official post. These include detailed explanations about Mercenaries, Trarthan Gems, and more.
The Mercenaries of Trarthus are a key part of this expansion.
Mercenaries of Trarthus – Everything You Need to Know

How does Mercenary gear work?
Mercenaries are generated with specific Attributes, and they can only equip armor that requires those same Attributes. For example, a Mercenary with only Strength can equip items that require Strength, Strength + Dexterity, or Strength + Intelligence. A Mercenary with Dexterity and Intelligence, however, is limited to items that require one or both of those stats, but never Strength.
They don’t need to meet attribute requirements like players do, but they must be at least 70% of the item’s level requirement to equip it.
Also, each Mercenary has preferred weapon types. If the weapon doesn’t match their skillset, they won’t equip it, no matter how powerful it is.

Mercenaries of Trarthus Do map modifiers affect Mercenaries?
Yes. Increased Item Quantity on maps also increases the chance of encountering Infamous Mercenaries in that area.
Can you use Link skills on Mercenaries?
Absolutely. Link skills can be cast on allied Mercenaries, as long as they stay alive to benefit from them.
Can gold be a reward from Mercenary pouches?
No. Gold will not drop as part of their loot.
Can Mercenaries be renamed?
No. Mercenaries retain their original names.
Can Mercenaries use gear with trigger-based effects, like Cast on Crit?
They can’t. Mercenary skills aren’t socketed like player skills, they’re built-in. Because of that, effects like Cast on Crit don’t function, as there’s no socketed gem to be triggered.
Are Mercenaries tradeable?
No. Mercenaries are account-bound and cannot be traded to other players.
Are they linked to the character or the account?
Mercenaries are tied to your account, not to individual characters.
Can I use a high-level Mercenary on a new character?
Only if the character is within 20 levels of the Mercenary’s level. If you’re too low-level, the Mercenary simply won’t follow you.
Do passive skills from gear work on Mercenaries?
Yes. Mercenaries benefit from anointed notables on amulets and keystones from unique items just like players do.
Can Trarthan Gems be found in the Divine Font at the end of the Labyrinth?
No. Trarthan Gems are exclusive to Mercenaries and begin to appear in level 68+ areas. Each Gem is tied to a specific Mercenary type.
Will Animate Guardian get a similar equipment interface?
No. However, one major change has been made:Animate Guardians now keep their gear after dying, but if they die, you can’t summon another Guardian in that same area, unless you’re in a hideout
Additional Clarifications:
Can the Maven witness the new Pinnacle Bosses?
Not yet, but it might happen in the future.
Are there Uber versions of the new bosses?
Currently, no. The campaign version of the boss is easier than the repeatable endgame version, and there are no Uber variants, for now.
Are the Tier 4 Syndicate rewards, like the treasure room after Catarina, still available?
No. That content has been removed.
Does interacting with Syndicate members pause the game?
Yes, interactions with the Syndicate will pause gameplay.
Do we still need to hire workers in Kingsmarch?
Yes. The town is already built, but workers still need to be hired and paid.
Do Runebinds count as separate masteries for things like Trickster’s Polymath or the Life Mastery bonus?
No. All Runegrafts count as the same type of mastery and do not count as Life masteries.

Conclusion:
The Mercenary system in Path of Exile 1 introduces a new layer of strategy and planning. From gear restrictions and level requirements to passive bonuses and exclusive gems, there are clear rules that players need to follow to make the most out of these new allies.
Alongside Mercenaries, other gameplay updates, such as changes to the Animate Guardian and the removal of old Syndicate content, show that the expansion isn’t just about adding features, but also about refining and evolving the game’s systems.
