Grinding Gear Games has been increasingly transparent about the direction of Path of Exile 2. Recently, This article covers the Path of Exile 2 interview Jonathan Rogers gave in an exclusive conversation with Kei from Zeta Division, sharing essential insights about the current state and future of the game.
In addition, screenshots shared by community streamers helped reinforce key discussion points brought up by GGG. Below, we’ve combined the most relevant highlights from the interview with major development updates revealed so far.
Path of Exile 2 Interview – New Trade System in Development
One of the most discussed topics among players is item trading. Jonathan confirmed that the team is working on a new trading system aimed at making exchanges more accessible and intuitive. The goal is to reduce frustrations, remove communication barriers, and streamline the experience especially for communities like Japan, who face difficulties with the current system.
While there is no confirmed release date, Jonathan stated that the change is a priority and the team is being careful to assess the economic impact before implementation.
The Reality of Hardcore and the Focus on Softcore
Despite Hardcore’s popularity among streamers, only 3–4% of global players consistently use it. As such, most of the game’s balancing is focused on Softcore. Jonathan emphasized that, in his view, a good boss fight should cause the player to die a few times before achieving victory, increasing the sense of challenge and reward.
Performance: Data Collection and Optimizations
The development team is now automatically collecting data on gameplay areas, including which skills are used and FPS performance in each zone. This will allow for targeted improvements, helping to identify which skills cause performance issues so they can be optimized accordingly.
Skills with multiple projectiles, like those from the Deadeye ascendancy, have caused frame rate issues on consoles due to CPU limitations. Jonathan assured that optimizing this is still a priority.
Full Controller Support
Controller support (gamepad) was planned from the very beginning of PoE 2's development. The team has implemented two distinct targeting modes, aimed at delivering a smooth experience for console and controller users. There’s still more work to be done, but the goal is for every skill to feel smooth and responsive, regardless of input method.
Combat Meant to Be More Meaningful (Not Slower)
Many players noticed a change in combat pacing in PoE 2, especially with the introduction of dodge rolls. Jonathan explained that the goal was never to slow down the game, but rather to make combat more meaningful and weighty.
The team is aware that even experienced players are taking longer than expected to complete maps. That’s why patch 0.3.0 is expected to introduce adjustments to overall map progression speed, including the number of maps required to reach pinnacle bosses.
Community Speculates August Release
While nothing has been officially confirmed by GGG or Jonathan Rogers, the community believes that patch 0.3.0 may arrive around August 8. This estimation is based on the four-month gap between previous patch releases.
Path of Exile 2 Interview Jonathan Rogers – Passive Tree and Class Evolution
The passive skill tree in PoE 2 was redesigned to offer more meaningful choices with each point allocated. According to Jonathan, some sections are still placeholders and will be finalized as new classes are introduced.
GGG is open to completely reworking entire classes if the current design doesn’t feel right. The goal is to ensure that each ascendancy has a unique identity and gameplay style, even more distinct than in the first game.
Mid-Tier Endgame Content
One common complaint among players is the abrupt jump in difficulty between mid-tier content (like Doryani) and pinnacle bosses. Jonathan acknowledged this gap and confirmed that the team plans to introduce new mid-tier challenges to smooth out progression and keep players engaged.
Portal System and Death Frustration
Another point raised was the frustration of single-portal tier 15 maps with heavy modifiers, if you die, the portal closes. Jonathan explained that players can manage their challenge level by choosing fewer modifiers, but admitted this system needs better balancing to avoid excessive punishment.
PoE 1 Items Will Carry Over
One of the most praised aspects of PoE 2 is the carryover of microtransactions from PoE 1. Jonathan confirmed that this is a commitment from GGG: everything purchased in the first game will still work in PoE 2.
Early Access and Live Feedback
Jonathan explained that early access has been essential for identifying balance issues, pacing problems, and combat feel, issues that only arise when thousands of players are involved. The goal is for everything to be finalized and polished by patch 1.0.
Conclusion:
Based on Jonathan’s statements and recent development updates, it’s clear that GGG is actively listening to its community and working hard to deliver a smoother, more accessible, and engaging experience in Path of Exile 2. Whether it's performance improvements, trade system reworks, or class redesigns, the game continues to evolve in a promising direction.
